Beck, Kanye West, Beyoncé...I can't comment on the situation. Mostly because I totally don't care. But then this mashup surfaced!
Certainly a great idea, if only because it's so topical. I admire mashup artists who use reasons other than musical ones when they combine their tracks, because the results can be so unexpected.
I think there are elements of this that work, and elements that don't. The verse is by far the best part of the mashup. The instrumental background is from the intro and chorus of "Loser," and Beyoncé sings the verse. Harmonically, rhythmically, this fits well. Beyoncé's voice has been slowed down, but not distractingly so. Other parts, however, seem forced. The bridge, for instance doesn't work for me. (Although I have to admit that the bridge of "Single Ladies" by itself doesn't work for me either. It's too far removed from the rest of the song. The key to a good bridge, in my opinion, is a magic balance between contrast and familiarity.) Later in the mashup, in my opinion, there are too many simultaneous vocals. This has a tendency to dissolve into cacaophony and sound like the singers are competing too much. But overall, a valiant effort with some really nice moments.
My friend and colleague, Michael Austin, said:
"I've always thought an important function of mashups was cultural critique. What's the message here? Is it about being a sore loser at the Grammys, about how Beyonce should have won (or not), or how we all just need to get along, or something else entirely?"
To me, I'm hearing the "Can't we all just get along?" message. Like, hey, these are both great artists who do different things, but they can function well together, and no one needs to step on anyone's toes. Different opinions? Please share!
